Today is the appropriately-named Blog Action Day, an effort to unite thousands of bloggers behind a single issue and create some momentum for policy change and citizen involvement. With partners like Kiva and Change.org the effort is decidedly CauseWired; this year’s focus is on poverty and the idea is to create a vast conversation with thousands of voices.

According to the organizers, Blog Action Day came together as a non-profit activity by a group of volunteer bloggers and the staff of Envato who donate their time and resources. It started as a “what would happen if” question and simply took on a life of its own. Big-time blogs involved include EU Minister Elena Valenciano, TechCrunch, ReadWriteWeb, LifeHacker, Mashable, Smashing, VentureBeat, ProBlogger, Inhabitat, ZenHabits, Stepcase LifeHack, MentalFloss, DailyBlogTips, TorrentFreak, SEOMoz, GetRichSlowly, WiseBread, LifeDev.net, GigaOm, and DumbLittleMan - altogether, more than 12,000 sites reaching more than 13 million readers.

My thoughts today relate to the global economic crisis and what I think may well be growing poverty in the industrialized world. Market wealth in the world’s biggest markets has declined by about 40 percent since last year. The credit abyss still beckons, as super-leveraged assets based on bad mortgages still need to find their (close to zero) levels. Unemployment will rise. Energy costs as a percentage of total wealth will grow. And we may even face challenges with food production.

Meanwhile, the private charitable sector - which provides much of the social safety net in the United States - is already over-taxed and now faces an expected decline in philanthropic contributions.

So, given what this blog is about, I have one “big thought” for Blog Action Day: that the growing cadre of online social activism platforms can and should focus some of their energy on domestic relief in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere in the developed world. There is something at the core of CauseWired movement that thrives around aiding the poorest of the poor; many of our greatest social entrepreneurs were inspired by trips to Africa or parts of Asia. Yet, poverty lurks everywhere in our developed world.

In this country, we failed to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The next administration must change the way we focus on poverty and our social safety net. I believe strongly that our CauseWired social entrepreneurs can be leaders in this effort, connecting millions of citizens to neighbors in need.

We CAN change the world one step at a time…. But remember ever little bit DOES help….Why dont you try too.

The WSH5 web blog will be participating in the Blog Action Day on October 15, 2008. Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.

First and last, the purpose of Blog Action Day is to create a discussion. We ask bloggers to take a single day out of their schedule and focus it on an important issue.By doing so on the same day, the blogging community effectively changes the conversation on the web and focuses audiences around the globe on that issue.Out of this discussion naturally flow actions, advice, ideas, plans, and empowerment. In 2007 on the theme of the Environment, we saw bloggers running environmental experiments, detailing innovative ideas on creating sustainable practices and focusing audience’s attentions on organizations and companies promoting green agendas. The Eye-Fi is the next leading memory storage device. It a memory card that connects your home network and up-loads the photos you take to your computer and social networing sites. The new features of it are:

• Web Sharing - Share pictures to your favorite photo services and social networks. It’s not free, but the convenience might justify the $9.99 annual fee they charge.
• Geotagging - If you have an Eye-Fi Home or Share card, you can have it guess your location based on Wi-Fi data. This probably works a lot better in urban areas, so think about how many known Wi-Fi networks are around your area before dropping the $14.99 yearly on this feature.
• Hotspot Access - Allow your Eye-Fi Share card to connect to networks other than your home location. There are over 10,000 Wayport hotspots in addition to open hotspots that you can connect to. This is also $14.99 annually.
• More Services - Now you have the option to upload your pictures automatically to AdoramPix or MobileMe along with the other 20 or so options. You of course would need to have Web Sharing to get any use out of this. But MobileMe’s Gallery feature might just have you spending that ten bucks a year.
• Retail Locations - By October 5th you’ll be able to buy Eye-Fi cards from over 900 Best Buy stores. Soon, the cards will also be available at Ritz Camera Centers, Circuit City and other online retail stores.
• Faster Speeds - The most exciting part of today’s announcement was the promise of a firmware update that will supposedly double the photo upload speeds on all models!

Ok. So while I was at camp my friends Sam and I were talking about sour stuff on the bus rie back from lake compunce. He had a packet of some sour powder. We all tried some and thought it was sour. However, it is not even close to Toxic Waste. Toxic Waste is the most sour candy known to man. You have to order ir online. It is avalible in Spray, Airhead Bars, Lolipop, and the sourest, Hard Candy. It is like a war head, except, instead of getting sweet, it gets sourer the longer it is in your mouth! It even has a warning to not eat to many at one time, or something bad will hapen to your mouth. Some guy on youtube ate 7 in 5 min, and his mouth started to bleed!
